Global Outreach Programs of the AAO Foundation

Through the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Foundation, ophthalmologists around the world access vital education, care, and service programs as they work to improve the state of eye health and treatment in their home countries. The foundation operates a number of global outreach programs, including the following:

International host programs: Through the Host an Ophthalmologist program, eye care professionals from developing countries can receive the necessary support to attend the annual meeting of the AAO, which represents a valuable opportunity for learning the latest skills and techniques and making new professional connections. A similar initiative, the Rotary Club Host Project, brings selected ophthalmologists to the United States for two weeks of comprehensive training and education.

The EyeCare Volunteer Registry: Health care organizations in developing countries may benefit from the presence of an experienced ophthalmologist to provide guidance and mentorship to local staff. The AAO operates the EyeCare Volunteer Registry to connect willing professionals with organizations looking for volunteers.

The Education Distribution Project: Every year, in partnership with the International Council of Ophthalmology, the AAO sends educational materials, such as the fundamental Basic and Clinical Science Course sets, to ophthalmology training programs in developing countries around the world.
